Community Service Requirements

Middle School Leadership ConferenceWhat is Community Service?
Your community service should be purposeful, intentional for a community and active.

  • Purposeful: It should have an impact.
  • Intentional for a community: Helping a professor/staff member, library personnel, grounds or open community service events as a specific, nonpaid service.
  • Active: Time spent in an activity – raising money for a philanthropy or PLP-sponsored activity.

What is NOT Community Service?
Community service is not service to a student-run club or organization. This includes anything that is already part of your job description for that organization, such as facilitating or leading a group.

Your community service should NOT be service that is required of you because of disciplinary action.

Planning for a community service event does not count, but your participation in that event does.

What are the Community Service Hour requirements?
You are required to complete 12.5 hours of community service per semester.

  • A portion of service may be completed on campus.
  • At least 4 hours must be completed off campus within the local community.
  • A portion of service may be completed outside of the local community as long as they are completed within the first day of class and last day of finals (spring and fall semester only).
  • Service hours must be documented on the Service and Involvement Form and turned in at the end of each semester.

Summer Hours
It is great that you are involved in community service during the summer. Please share this with us so we can add it to your total number of hours you complete while you are in the program. However, your summer hours do not count toward the semester requirements. No matter how many community service hours you completed during the summer, you must still complete 12.5 hours of service during each semester. We want PLP students to be active in the Hampton Roads community during the school year.

Overnights
Many students like to host prospective PLP students overnight as a way to earn community service hours. This is a great way to help out the program, provide a welcoming experience for the CNU community and earn hours! You can earn four hours per student that you host, up to a maximum of eight hours per semester through overnight hosting. Newport Nursing HomeBasically, you can host two students per semester for eight hours of service.

PLP Service Events
Throughout the semester the PLP will sponsor, plan and coordinate various service events with the purpose of creating opportunity for you to work with your fellow classmates on a specific service project.  In the past these have included Habitat for Humanity, BINGO at the Newport Nursing Home and the Angels Race Triathlon in Lynchburg, VA.
